I was talking to a friend yesterday and I told her that it feels like our seasons have been slowly shifting back one month and no longer match up with the calendar. Winter now seems to be January through early April. Spring is starts to show itself from mid-April through June. Summer doesn’t appear until July and goes until the end of September, and Fall is now October through the end of December.

Since we didn’t start getting any snow this winter until mid-January, I have a feeling we will still see snow on the ground and cold temperatures until the end of March and even into early April. Our brains and bodies haven’t adjusted and now that it’s almost March, we instinctively start looking forward to the winter thaw just to find ourselves stricken with a terrible case of cabin fever.

That’s what happened in our house just the other day. Normally, when we get snow, we like to go outside and play, sled, and build snowmen. Unfortunately, we’ve had a lot of head colds around these parts the past few weeks and haven’t had the opportunity to go outside so we’ve been climbing the walls and praying for warm weather. Just the other day my two younger kids dug out the swim goggles and wore them around the house. Just seeing Little Miss Throwsafit and Littlest One wearing them brought images of warm, sunny days, flip flops, and tank tops.

Is it summer, yet?

Just about an hour ago, I walked into the living room, saw my daughter sitting on the couch watching Noggin and I thought, “oh my gosh, she’s got to get to bed.” Then I looked at the clock on the stove. It was 7:39pm. It wasn’t even 8:00pm but to me it felt like 10pm.

The shortening of the days as the year moves from summer to fall always jars me. The rest of the transition summer to fall transition is wonderful. I feel a sense of renewal as the leaves change colors. I breathe deeply when I sense a crispness in the air. And the fall clothes. Fall fashions are my favorites.

I love so much of fall, but it takes me weeks to get used to the sun going down earlier. And soon, in just a matter of weeks, it will be dark by the time my husband gets home from work at 6:00pm.

Maybe I need to buy a daylight lamp.

This one is called the Happy Light. What a great name. Who doesn’t want to be happy?

We’re up north this weekend. It’s one of our few remaining weekends of our canoe season and we’re enjoying every moment.

It is beautiful today. The air is warm and not a cloud in the sky. This morning was perfect as far as fall mornings go. It was cold, yes, but the air was so clean and crisp. The pine floated fragrantly in the air. I sipped my coffee from a tin coffee cup. The experience was idyllic.

When I arrived with the kids last night I noticed immediately after having been away for a few weeks that the air really is cleaner up here than it is downstate. Our new house is in a very nice neighborhood, in a very nice town away from a lot of traffic. There are a lot of trees and grass. Yet, the air quality up north is still so much better.

It feels good to be back up north.

It’s almost Labor Day, which means the Fall season is approaching quickly here Up North. The nights are getting cooler. In fact, tonight’s low is sinking to 41. We’re seeing a lot more patches of reds, golds, and oranges on green trees. All this makes me very happy because Fall is my favorite season. I love the crispness in the air, the colors, and the clothes. I’m giddy at the thought that it’s almost time to pull the pretty sweaters and longer jean skirts out of storage.

If you’re not quite ready for Fall, then take a look at this video. You’ll get in the Fall state of mind very quickly.
