Today is Little Man’s seventh birthday. I still can’t believe how old he is now. He’s in the first grade and is really enjoying himself. We celebrated tonight with our family, my parents and my father in law (my mother in law is in Florida taking care of her step mother who is dying). Here are some pictures of the fun and festivities:

I was playing around with Picnik so I put this picture in a Polaroid effect. But there are two things I want you to notice about this image. One, take a look at how serious Little Man is here. What’s with that face? Second, check out that amazing Ho Ho cake (and I love the candles, too) that my neighbor Kathleen made. I know you’re all wondering so I’ll just tell you now. It tasted even better than it looks.

I just could not accept Little Man only giving me serious faces on his birthday so I insisted that he smile for me.

Ah, much better. In case you’re wondering, I was playing with the Picnik effects again.

Although Littlest One’s birthday isn’t until Monday, we celebrated his second birthday tonight as well, which is why we have seven candles on one side of the cake and two more on the other side.

Gah! If that stupid Coke Zero can weren’t in the way you’d have a clear shot of that beautiful cake. Anyway, Steve held up Littlest One to introduce him to the concept of blowing out candles. He didn’t it so Steve had to blow out the candles for him. I love the expression on Little Miss Throwsafit’s face. Her birthday isn’t until June, so she was forced onto the sidelines to watch the boys open presents. She ended up commandeering one of Littlest One’s toys, a cute dog pull toy, and since Littlest One was engrossed in his Dirt Devil toy vacuum cleaner, he didn’t notice at all. Everyone was happy.

The other front tooth is loose, too, so he’d look awfully cute if that one fell out soon, too. He’d then be able to sing, “all I want for Christmas is my two front teeth.” Heck he may be able to whistle out of the gap. The possibilities are endless!

I confess I enjoy it, too. I love the singing and dancing, but my favorite part is how the show focuses on the kids’ imaginations. The backyard turns into whatever they imagine.

One of my 6 year old’s favorite episodes is Super Secret Spy. He loves how the characters find clues and don disguises. For Christmas my husband got him a kids spy kit. It comes as a briefcase and contains all kinds of stuff spies need, like sunglasses with mirrors so that you can see if someone is following you, a passport with an alternative identity, a mustache so you can disguise yourself on a mission. My son loved it. For weeks afterward he wore his mustache and sunglasses around the house, as he surreptitiously completed various spy missions around the house. It was so cute that I had to take a picture of him.

Who is that man of mystery? That master of disguise?

Ack. I can’t believe this much time has gone by already. Anyway, my husband and I are wondering what to get him. Steve already got him a pirate ship of some sort and we’re now wondering what else to get him. Michelle Malkin writes that Bakugan is the big thing, but honestly, I’ve never heard of it. It’s apparently a Japanese animation on the Cartoon Network, but we don’t watch that very much in our house. Little Man is a movie watcher. Right now, his favorites are Jurassic Park, Spiderman 3, Night at the Museum, The Haunted Mansion, and now movies and books about the Civil War. On our way home from DC, we stopped off at Gettysburg where we did a car tour of the battlefield. My son was enthralled with the idea that a battle took place there and all kinds of people died. Morbid, I know, but that’s a boy for you, I guess. Once we got home, we pulled out our VHS tapes of the movie Gettysburg and watched it.

Anyway, we’re still trying to figure out what else to get him for his birthday. He’s got so many dinosaurs, books about dinosaurs, and remote control dinosaurs that we’re being overrun. Maybe some Union Army and Confederate Army action figures would do the trick.

We had our first kindergarten controversy yesterday. Little Man got off the bus yesterday (Wednesday) and told me that a boy in his class named L took his backpack, opened it up, and took his toy Pirates of the Caribbean telescope that we got on our trip to Walt Disney World last March. I asked LM if he told the boy to give it back to him. He said yes but the boy ignored him. I didn’t want to make too a big deal of this, but I also didn’t want to give LM the impression that it was OK for this boy or anyone else to take his property. I told him that when he got back on the bus the next morning he should ask L for his telescope back, and if he doesn’t have it or if he refuses, then he needs to talk to his teacher. Just to make sure Mrs. B, his teacher, was aware, I left her a voice mail on her room telephone and told her what I advised Little Man to do.

Yes, we’re talking about a toy, but these 5-6 year olds are learning how to interact with each other, so they are testing the boundaries to see what they can get away with. Out of principle, I wanted to nip this in the bud, so the kids, including my son, know that they can’t just take someone else’s backpack, rifle through it, and take what they want.

Well, Mrs. B was wonderful. She called me this morning and told me that she didn’t want to wait until Little Man came to her, so she went up to him before class began and asked him if he had anything he wanted to tell her. Not skipping a beat, he told her that L took his telescope. She spoke to L and he admitted to taking it. From there she called L’s mother and told her that the telescope needed to be returned. She also got one of the school volunteers, a retired police officer, involved. She had him come and speak to her entire class about respecting other people’s property and that it’s unacceptable for anyone to steal from someone else. Mrs. B said the kids’ eyes were as big as saucers.

Mrs. B called a second time to tell me that the L’s mother brought the telescope and that it’s now in Little Man’s backpack.

Little Man gets home in a little under 2 hours, so I’m curious to hear his take on things.
